How Often Should You Replace Your Toothbrush?

Your toothbrush might not look worn out, but using it past its prime can impact your oral health. The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months. If you notice frayed or worn bristles before then, it’s time for a new one.

Why swap it out regularly? Old toothbrushes are less effective at removing plaque, and worn bristles can hurt your gums. Additionally, toothbrushes can harbor bacteria, especially after you’ve been sick. Kids may need replacements even more often, since they tend to brush with more enthusiasm (and wear out the bristles faster!).

To get the most out of your toothbrush, rinse it thoroughly after each use and let it air dry upright. Avoid sharing toothbrushes, and remember: a fresh brush means a healthier, brighter smile.
