How to Brush & Floss Your Teeth Properly – Are You Doing It Wrong?

Why Proper Brushing and Flossing Matters

Brushing and flossing are the foundation of good oral health. Done correctly, they remove plaque, prevent cavities, and keep your gums healthy. But many people use the wrong technique—and don’t even realize it.

How to Brush Your Teeth Properly

  1. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Hard bristles can damage enamel and gums.
  2. Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. More isn’t better.
  3. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums. This lets bristles get just under the gumline.
  4. Brush gently in small circles. Don’t scrub back and forth aggressively.
  5. Brush for two minutes twice a day. Use a timer—or hum a song that’s two minutes long!
  6. Don’t forget your tongue. Plaque and bacteria collect there too.

How to Floss Properly

  1. Use about 18 inches of floss. Wrap most around your middle fingers, leaving a few inches to work with.
  2. Gently slide the floss between your teeth. Don’t snap it against your gums.
  3. Curve the floss in a “C” shape around each tooth. Glide it up and down to remove plaque.
  4. Use a clean section of floss for each tooth. This avoids spreading bacteria.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled brush
  • Not brushing long enough
  • Flossing only occasionally
  • Skipping the gum line or back teeth

The Bottom Line

Good technique matters! With just a few tweaks to your brushing and flossing routine, you can dramatically improve your oral health. Have questions? Ask your dentist at your next appointment for a quick demo.
